About Buddha

Buddha - Sanskrit for the awakened one - is an enlightened being upon whose teachings Buddhism was founded. A Buddha is one who as reached wisdom, or "Bodhi" - an intellectual and ethical ideal that can be achieved by humankind. Buddhists believe that a Buddha is born in each aeon of time, and Gotama - the sage who achieved enlightenment at Bodh Gaya under the bodhi tree - is our Buddha, and the seventh Buddha in succession.

In his form, Buddha is depicted in form seated with his legs crossed in the lotus position, a symbol of wisdom and spiritual growth. Buddha's hands may appear in different symbolic gestures, or "mudras," signifying inner peace, fearlessness or imparting of knowledge.
